We recently celebrated Veterans Day nationwide, a day when everyone is reminded about the importance of the men and women that protect this country, both in the past and in the present. While that day only comes once a year, there are many things that you can do all year long to honor and support veterans at the Lake of the Ozarks. Here are 10 ideas from the Bunker Bar & Grill at VFW Post 5923.
#1 – Display Your Patriotism
There are lots of different ways that you can show pride for the country we live in, both to others and for your own benefit, which eventually benefits everyone. Fly the American flag proudly outside of your home or business. Study history and learn about the wars fought by veterans to make sure we have this wonderful country to live in. Stay informed about current events and get involved in your community. Vote when you get the chance, and have a “we” rather than “me” mindset. Veterans fought to ensure that we have the freedom to do all of these things, so don’t waste their efforts.
#2 – Offer Veterans Discounts at Your Business
Offering the veterans that use your services a discount is a nice way to say thank you to them and their families. This small gesture can make a big difference in some cases. Publicly offering special perks to veterans also shows your other customers that you are a friendly local business that cares about people in the community.
#3 – Hire Veterans
Veterans are very intelligent, extremely capable people that are hard workers and can be an asset to any business. If you have a position at your business that needs to be filled, consider hiring one of these amazing people.
#4 – Join the VFW or it’s Auxiliary
If you yourself are a veteran, joining the VFW allows you to both show support for and get support from fellow veterans. You can learn about signing up at www.LakeVFW.org. The VFW Auxiliary is open to anyone who is a relative of those that served in overseas combat. The organization lets you get involved at the VFW, network, and develop new friendships and new skills. For more information or to sign up, visit www.vfwauxiliary.org.
#5 – Eat at the Bunker Bar & Grill
Our restaurant and bar at the Lake of the Ozarks is a smoke-free establishment that is open to the public every Wednesday through Sunday. Proceeds help to keep this wonderful new VFW building in Camdenton up and running. Lunch and dinner are available beginning at 11 am Wednesday-Saturday and at noon on Sundays, and the kitchen stays open until 8 pm. The bar remains open until 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays, and the until 11 pm every other night we are open.
#6 – Play Bingo at the VFW in Camdenton
Every Friday and Saturday evening the Camdenton VFW hosts one of the lake area’s most popular BINGO games. Doors open at 5 pm, and the Early Bird games start at 6:30 pm with Horse Race games prior to that. Each night 24 games are played with 2 progressive jackpots that get bigger every week if no one wins. The winner of each night’s last game takes 90% of that game, and there is also a $500 coverall jackpot every night. All other game winnings are determined by attendance. All of the proceeds made go toward benefitting veterans and the VFW Post 5923.
#7 – Attend VFW Events or Host Your Own Event
Throughout the year there will be different events either hosted by the local VFW or in honor of our veterans. You can show your support by attending these events, plus you’ll have a great time while you are there and get to know some veterans that live near you. The Bunker Bar & Grill at VFW Post 5923 also houses the Francis “Frank” Geilfuss II Community Room that is available for rent to host your own meetings, social gatherings, or parties.
#8 – Support the Veterans Day Parade & Air Show
Instead of just attending an event for veterans, be a part of one. Sign up to be in the Veterans Day Parade in Osage Beach next November or to help put it together. The Lake of the Ozarks Air Show can always use more volunteers to make that amazing event happen every September too. Get out and be a part of one of these incredible events.
#9 – Donate to the Veterans Relief Fund
Every VFW has a relief fund that gladly accepts donations that go toward providing aid, assistance, and comfort to needy or disabled veterans and members of the Armed Forces. It also helps their dependents and the widows and orphans of deceased veterans. The Camdenton VFW’s Post Relief Fund has used the money raised here for things like veterans’ vehicle repair bills, overdue rent and utility bills, and lodging for a stranded veteran.
#10 – Simply Say “Thank You!”
This is perhaps the easiest thing that you can do to show your support to a veteran. A simple “Thank you for your service” means the world to a veteran. It only takes a moment of your time and doesn’t cost you a penny, but it will put a smile on that vet’s face and yours.
Veterans Day isn’t the only day of the year that veterans need and deserve your support. Come on out to the Bunker Bar & Grill at VFW Post 5923 in Camdenton and get to know everyone that hangs out here with us. It’s a wonderful way to support local veterans and your community, plus make some incredible new friendships along the way.
